As a 38-year veteran of the banking and equipment leasing industries, Alta Group Principal Joe Boland provides the firm with unique expertise in credit risk management for large, multi-national enterprises and financing companies. He works with clients that leverage his extensive experience with multi-line, multi-country businesses.

Joe assists clients in the development or improvement of credit policies, processes, portfolios, controls and systems, and recruitment of executives to lead such operations.

Prior to joining The Alta Group, Joe was Chief Credit Officer of IBM Corporation and its financing subsidiary, IBM Global Financing. He was responsible for optimizing credit risk position for the financing, services and mainline sales organizations on an integrated basis across 80+ countries. Joe managed the successful effort to implement enterprise-wide risk management policies and practices and led the development of a global credit system. He joined IBM in 1990 as director of credit for the financing business and became IBM chief credit officer in 1997.

Before joining IBM, Joe spent a decade with Swiss Bank Corporation (now UBS) as the senior executive in the U.S. corporate banking division. Later he was appointed chief credit officer in the Americas . He began his career in 1971 in the corporate banking division at the Irving Trust Company – now known as Bank of New York – working in the worldwide corporation’s group as a sector manager responsible for global relationships with major multi-national accounts.

Joe is a graduate of Manhattan College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He served as an Officer in the US Marine Corps in the late 1960s.
