MARC BAERT

As the former Secretary General of Leaseurope and Eurofinas for over 20 years, Belgium-based Alta Principal Marc Baert is a hugely influential figure within the European leasing and asset finance community. As a result of his long tenure at the helm of Leaseurope and by supporting emerging countries in developing their leasing industries, Marc has surely amassed a broader range of contacts across Europe’s leasing industry than anyone else.

Leaseurope and Eurofinas are the European federations for leasing and consumer credit respectively and their membership comprises the national associations. Their main purpose is to represent the industries’ views and their members’ interests in the European Community and within the European Commission. As such, Marc has been closely involved in all of the key changes that have affected the industries across Europe over a significant period of evolution, giving him a unique insight into the impact of developments past, present and future.

Marc played a significant part in assisting the development of fledgling leasing and asset finance markets in Central and Eastern European countries, many of which had no industry history or experience. Leaseurope, and Marc in particular, was instrumental in providing guidelines, a framework and advice to help them formulate their laws and practices, thus helping to establish what are now frequently flourishing industries.

Marc focuses on Central, Eastern and South-Eastern European emerging markets from within the ranks of Alta, as part of a broader brief to support their continuing expansion and routes to maturity. This includes training and guidance.

A lawyer by training, Marc also has an MBA from the University of Ghent. Prior to becoming Secretary General of Leaseurope and Eurofinas, he spent 13 years at International Factors in Brussels, rising to become Director of Sales and Marketing.
